Unit Six - Sports Development

Assiment One

Assessment 1.2
Barriers to Participation

I will be discussing and evaluating some barriers that stop certain people from participating in sport.
I will also say how companies are minimising these barriers so more people can participate.

Women

I will begin with the barriers that face women in sporting environments. Some people think that certain sports like football and rugby are only played by men; this is incorrect as there are many elite level sports on which both men and women can compete at.

The Football Association of Wales starts the women professional level at under  17. This is good because it shows that to get into the under 17 squad you need to of been playing at a younger age.
“40% of women are not actively involved in sport from the age of 18 onwards”, this is a quote which is a shocking statistic shows why sport development agencies are aiming towards women.

Single-Sex exercise classes are specifically aimed towards women, these would include activities such as pilates and aerobics. They are meant to encourage women into an environment where they will feel comfortable and relaxed.
But a recent survey by Sport England say’s that the number of women participating in sport has increase by 13.2% from 2005 till 2008. This is a good fact but still is only 2.81 million women participating.

Young People

If young people are taught good habits and the sessions are fun then the likelihood of them continuing are higher than those whom do not have proper teaching and do not have a good time.
The Youth Sport Trust focuses on young people from the age of 18 months to 18 years old.
They provide the tools required to deliver sessions of high-quality in school sport and PE lessons. They encourage both sexes to participate and also on children with disability.
On the Youth Sport Trust’s website (http://www.youthsporttrust.org/ ) their aim for gifted and talented people are to:-
A. High Quality - Raising the quality of PE for gifted and talented young people

B. Support - ensuring appropriate personal development support for young talented performers in sport

C. Raising the quality of coaching and competition for talented performers in sport

In a video which can be viewed at http://gifted.youthsporttrust.org/page/portfolio-video/index.html we can see how they are able to identify potential gifted and talented people.

Over 50’s

There is a greater need for people in this category to stay fit mainly due to the recession of 2009 and the good pension schemes available to people.

Schemes that are available to this group are mainly focused at the participation level of the sports development continuum, but they mainly go to these schemes for the social aspect as well as the fact it keeps them fit.
In Swansea there is a 30x5 scheme which encourages people over the age of 50 to do a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise for 5 days per week.
They have a scheme called Active Swansea, I will include there brochure. Quoting from there website-
In Wales, only 28% of people meet these current recommendations of being active - this is only 17% in Swansea”

Sports Development Assiment 6.3

England
Basketball

England basketball has a clear pathway which is easy for every participant to understand and act upon.
Below is a quote from their website which gives a brief but solid overview of the lower stages of the structure.
“The Regional program is a player development system for male and females. Regional squads are put together at the Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 age groups. The program serves as both an identification and development process for England's ten regions. It provides players with a direct pathway to progress from their home club to Regional selection and then to England national junior squad and team selection. It links clubs to country through localised organisation and knowledge”

Role 1
Providers
Sports development has many contributors which means that many people set up organisations, this is good because it can widen the range of sports available to young people.
There are two factors and they are enabling and facilitating, enabling is when the provider responds to the recipients needs by providing facilities and equipment. Facilitating is when the provider motivates and helps people so that they can look after themselves afterwards.

Direct delivery are schemes that are carried out by professional sports developers, the local authority may run these schemes.

Role 2

Sports Development Officers
These are professionally trained and qualified people who generally are employed by the local authority. They are versatile and are able to manage a budget.
Sport-specific – A specialist whom is employed to focus on one sport such as football.
Non-sport specific – They are able to work on more aspects of sports and cover a wider range of sports.
Community – These remit to work with different age groups and abilities in the community.

Role 3
Volunteers
This is the largest category because there are much more people who are volunteers than development officers.
They generally fund raise to pay for the facilities and equipment needed to train the participants.
They are CRB checked and may go on to get coaching badges, They generally keep to the grass roots level because at this level the basic skills are taught which most people can teach but as more higher level would need more advanced skills to be taught that a person may not know teach.

WRU
The WRU is a governing body over the national rugby in Wales.
Below is a continuum of the pathway needed for a person whom wishes to play at a high level.

A national governing body has 4 main aims:-
·       Growth and retention – increasing the number of players and addressing retention.
·       Raising standards and addressing abusive behaviour
·       Development of better players from years 5-11.
·       Running the game effectively and leading the governing of the game.

Sports Central (Football)
Sports central is a Scottish company who manages all the sports in Scotland, below is an example continuum that they have produced to show the pathway to play football in Scotland.

They have very similar aims to the WRU but they focus more on the early development and they set up more opportunities for the children to get into teams.
This continuum starts before local school PE which shows how dedicated Sports Central is to getting young boys and girls into football.
